The Role of Religion, Morality, and Free Will in Economics and Human Behaviour: An Islamic Perspective
Economics and human behaviour cannot be separated from religion and morality. Economics is not just about material production and consumption, but it is also about human well-being, which includes both material and spiritual needs. Human behaviour is not determined by physical impulses alone, but it is also influenced by free will, which enables humans to choose between right and wrong.
Humans are not just machines, but they have a spiritual dimension that is essential for their happiness and fulfillment. The spiritual dimension is the connection between humans and their Creator, who is the source of all wisdom and justice. It is also the basis of morality, which guides human actions towards good and away from evil. They are not observable or measurable by science, but they are evident by reason and intuition. They are also confirmed by revelation, which is the communication of God’s will to humans through prophets and scriptures. Revelation is not dubious, but it is clear and consistent. It can be verified by its coherence, its wisdom, its prophecies, its miracles, and its impact on human history.
Free will does not contradict the laws of nature, but it complements them. The laws of nature describe how things work in the physical world, but they do not prescribe how humans should act in the moral world. Humans have the ability to use their reason and conscience to follow or disobey the laws of nature.
Reason and conscience are not products of the brain, but they are faculties of the soul, which is a spiritual substance independent of matter. The soul is proved by its effects on human life. The soul is what makes humans different from animals. It gives them intelligence, creativity, emotions, values, dignity, responsibility, accountability, and purpose. The purpose of human life is to worship God and to serve His creation. This is what brings true happiness and fulfillment to humans in this world and in the hereafter.
Happiness and fulfillment are not subjective feelings, but they are objective states that result from living in harmony with God’s will. There is an objective standard for them, which is revealed by God in His scriptures. The Qur’an is the final revelation from God to all humanity. It confirms the previous scriptures that were sent to Moses, Jesus, and other prophets.
The Qur’an is the final revelation because it contains no errors or contradictions. It challenges anyone to produce a chapter like it or to find a flaw in it. It explains all aspects of life in a clear and comprehensive way. It provides guidance for personal and social reform. It invites people to use their reason and evidence to verify its truth. It fulfills the prophecies and confirms the teachings of the previous scriptures. It performs miracles and signs that attest to its divine origin.
These are not mere claims, but they are facts that can be verified by anyone who is sincere and open-minded. Science is not the only way to acquire knowledge, but it is one of the ways that supports the Qur’an. Science supports the Qur’an by confirming its statements about the natural phenomena, such as the creation of the universe, the expansion of the cosmos, the formation of the earth, the origin of life, the development of the human embryo, and many others. The Qur’an also encourages scientific inquiry and discovery, as it urges humans to observe and reflect on the signs of God in nature.
Science can explain how things work in nature, but it cannot explain why they work or who made them work. Science cannot answer the ultimate questions of existence, purpose, and destiny. Science cannot provide a moral framework for human actions. Science cannot guarantee human well-being.
Human well-being can be guaranteed by following the Islamic worldview and strategy, which are based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah (the example of Prophet Muhammad). The Islamic worldview and strategy provide a balanced and comprehensive approach to economics and human behaviour, which aims at achieving both efficiency and equity, both material and spiritual needs, both individual and social welfare, both worldly and eternal success.
This approach works in practice by looking at the history of Islam and its civilization, which flourished for centuries in various fields of knowledge, arts, culture, trade, justice, and human rights. It also works in practice by looking at the contemporary examples of Muslim individuals and communities who have applied this approach in their lives and have achieved remarkable results. I can give many examples. For instance, there are Muslim scientists who have made significant contributions to various branches of science, such as physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, engineering, and computer science. There are Muslim entrepreneurs who have established successful businesses that are ethical, innovative, and socially responsible. There are Muslim philanthropists who have donated generously to various causes that benefit humanity. There are Muslim activists who have fought for justice, peace, human rights, and environmental protection. There are Muslim scholars who have written books and articles that enlighten people about Islam and its relevance to modern issues. There are Muslim artists who have created beautiful works of art that inspire people with their message of faith and hope. There are Muslim leaders who have governed their countries with wisdom and integrity. There are Muslim families who have raised their children with love and care. There are Muslim individuals who have lived their lives with honesty and piety. These examples are not meant to prove that Islam is the only way to achieve human well-being. They are meant to show that Islam is a viable way to achieve human well-being. They are meant to invite you to explore Islam further and to consider its claims seriously.
I respect your position, but I urge you not to reject Islam without giving it a fair chance. I invite you to read the Qur’an with an open mind and heart. I invite you to study the life of Prophet Muhammad with an objective eye. I invite you to learn from the experiences of Muslims who have embraced Islam after being followers of other religions or ideologies. I invite you to ask God sincerely for guidance and clarity. You should ask God for guidance because He is the only one who can guide you to the truth. He is closer to you than your jugular vein. He knows what is in your heart and mind. He loves you more than anyone else. He wants you to be happy in this world and in the hereafter. I know that God loves you because He created you with a noble purpose. He endowed you with reason and conscience. He gave you talents and abilities. He bestowed upon you countless blessings. He sent you messengers and scriptures to guide you. He gave you free will to choose your path.
